Forty-four percent of the more than 200 companies that responded to a Willis Towers Watson poll in early March stated their annual incentive plan has been or will be impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. One can only assume that number has shot higher nearly two months later.
Most companies that have discussed the impact on their incentive plan are maintaining their existing goals, but with the intention of applying discretion at the end of the year once the full extent of the impact is better understood. Respondents indicate that until there is clearer cause and effect between sales and the virus it is too soon to think about adjustments.
Recognition is a tricky proposition in this environment, but also more important than ever. While many employees continue to work remotely, employers are advised to stay close through video chats, phone calls and emails. If you haven’t already, now is a good time to reward workers for taking certain actions.
