Trustability test

How will your company fare in the era of trustability? One indicator is how you’d answer these questions based on how things work at your company.

  • Has your company ever considered the possible benefits of making any of your intellectual property — patents, copyrights, proprietary information, etc. — more generally available to outsiders?

  • Has your company ever considered “free revealing” any aspect of the company’s proprietary or confidential business processes or technologies? If it were to do so, who at your company would likely advocate in favor of it, who would be against it, and who would have the final decision?

  • To the extent that your company sells or benefits from “content” (entertainment, music, news or information rendered in print, audio or video), how easy is it for people to copy or pass it along to others? Is this an issue that would be dealt with by sales and marketing staff, customer service, legal staff or someone else?

  • Do you have a social media policy that encourages, limits or prohibits employees from participating as employees? What social media policies at other companies have you reviewed, if any, in setting up your own?

  • Have you identified the high-influence commentators in your business category — the people who blog and critique your brand, your business and your competitors’ brands? Do you reach out to them? How?
